Barking and Dagenham is home to the Becontree estate, built in the 1920s and 1930s and once the largest public housing estate in the world, alongside Victorian terraces in Barking and new homes at Barking Riverside. I’m buying a house on the Becontree estate that’s already been extended. What should I check?
Many Becontree homes have had rear extensions and loft conversions added. Check they had Building Control sign-off, and look for cracking where the extension meets the house. We inspect and tell you whether the work looks properly supported.
My new-build flat at Barking Riverside has hairline cracks. Is that serious?
Hairline cracks in new plaster are usually caused by drying shrinkage and are normal in the first year or two. Wider or growing cracks should be reported to the developer and your warranty provider. We can give you an independent view.
